DepEd: Sablay to replace togas in elementary and high school graduations

Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua proposed to use the Sablay instead of the toga for elementary and secondary school graduation rites.

In a Facebook post, Pascua explained that his proposal would still have to go through the DepEd Execom and Mancom Groups before approval.

Meanwhile, in the memo that he issued, Pascual mentioned that the Sablay can “instill patriotism and nationalism among young learners; promote core values of Makakalikasan and Makabansa; promote local culture and national diversity; nurture ethnic roots and perpetuate the production of local textiles of indigenous peoples.”

Moreover, the change in graduation gala also might “boost rural development; provide jobs and empower women and men weavers; revive and sustain local and traditional weaving enterprises.”

Pascua also described the use of the toga as a tradition with Western roots. He also added that if approved, the usage of the Sablay would be cost-efficient to the parents.

The Sablay is popularly known for being the official academic costume of the University of the Philippines (UP)  System.

The University of the Philippines defines the Sablay as “ (a symbol of) our nationalism and the importance we put upon our indigenous culture, which are among the values learned from the University.”
